Adding Facebook Open Graph Meta Data

Our Google Structured Data extension is designed specifically to generate structured data for search engines. Social platforms like Facebook do not use structured data for their previews. Instead, they rely on the Open Graph protocol to display the correct image, title, and description when a page is shared.

Our extension does not manage Open Graph out of the box. However, there is a workaround: you can use the Custom Code option of our extension to add your own meta tags, including Open Graph tags, to your pages. This requires knowing which meta tags to use and applying the proper Smart Tags (e.g. to return the title, image, or URL of the current page).

Add Facebook Open Graph Using Code

Follow the steps below to add Open Graph metadata to your pages using the Custom Code option:

  1. Go to Google Structured Data → Components
  2. Open the Items section
  3. Click New
  4. In the Content Type dropdown, select Custom Code
  5. Choose the integration you want to markup (e.g. Joomla Articles, VirtueMart, etc.)
  6. In the Custom Code field, enter the Open Graph meta tags you want to add

You can find the official list of available Open Graph meta tags here: Open Graph protocol documentation

Customization Service

If you prefer not to handle the Open Graph implementation yourself, we also offer a customization service. Our team can implement the Open Graph protocol for you, tailored to your site’s needs, for an additional fee. Just get in touch with us and let us know your requirements.
